I paced back and forth across the kitchen until I thought I’d burn through the floor. An unnamed energy was burning in my chest, and I just wanted it gone. Too much had happened in the last hour, and I didn’t know how to process it.

Giuliani totally bought the staged photos and seemed excite to pass them along to Camilla’s father. That would have been big news, except my mind just kept replaying what had happened in the basement. We’d shared a tender moment, a vulnerable moment that felt…nice. But because of our situation, I had no idea what was real. Was Camilla pretending to care about me? I felt like I was going crazy.

I also couldn’t forget what had preceded that moment. Enzo was gone.

Like I’d told Camilla, I knew Enzo was in bad shape. He’d been shot in the chest, and he hadn’t woken up since he’d arrived in the hospital, but that didn’t make the news of his loss any easier to bear.

My phone vibrated, and I hesitated before answering it, not ready for anymore surprising news. Luckily, it was just Giuliani with a follow up text about the photos. He sent them to Andrea Toscano and he actually responded, wanting to meet to discuss.

I scrolled back up to look at the photos again. They really were convincing. So much so that I felt sick to my stomach imagining Camilla being beaten by anyone. Even the fake bruises were too real. Then, I realized I’d left the room without leaving her anything to clean up with. She’d had dirt smudged across her face for the last hour.

I grabbed a towel from the linen closet upstairs and walked back downstairs. I hadn’t offered Camilla a shower since the first time when she’d shredded her own dress in an attempt to strangle me with it. And although that had only happened two days before, I felt like I could trust her now. And even if I couldn’t, I was prepared for any tricks she might pull.

Camilla was sitting on the end of the bed, my shirt pulled down over her knees and her hands folded beneath her chin. When the door opened, she sat up straight and looked at me. I could see where she’d tried to wipe the dirt from her face, but it was still dried on under her eyes.

“I thought you might want to wash the dirt off,” I said.

She didn’t say anything as I took her chains off, dropping them on the floor, and she followed me into the bathroom. I stood in the far corner of the room near the door while she adjusted the water temperature and tossed her towel over the curtain rod.

“I’m going to…” she gestured to her shirt.

“Right.” I turned away from her, allowing her a moment of privacy to undress and step into the water. When the curtain rattled closed again, I turned my head back and noticed her clothes in a discarded pile on the floor.

Within a few minutes, the bathroom was filled with steam.
